NATURE

Whales, dolphins and other marine mammals, such as myself.

By Eduardo Rincón Gallardo - Tour/Reps Eco Adventures Guide - May 2007.

Went sailing the other morning, around noon surely the wind caught up carrying me to my private paradise, booby ducks were fishing for sardines, diving vertically at great speed and trying hard to make a better record than they are known for, I put a couple of lines out, though I guess there were only sardines around because my lures were not appealing to any fish that could make a worthwhile lunch.

I had no reason to complain, for a while there was a light breeze and I could swim along “Superior” (my 30’ Catalina) at a pace that could last, don’t know, seemed like forever.

It was one of those days that make you ask our enduring planet: “is this the last perfect day?”

Then I saw, in the middle of it all, a pool like those circular ones left behind by whales’ flukes when they dive, and started looking out for a giant manta, which I thought would be the only creature that, today, could alter the surface somewhat similarly.

I saw no giant manta, but a large brownish shadow underneath and after no time I could see behind me the spray of a large whale I did not anticipate to see this far toward the end of April.

We enjoyed each other’s company as we spontaneously shared a portion of our journey in this fortunate place and time and I am left with questions not really aimed at answers.

Just questions that are part of the magic and mystery marine mammals share, because we are  curious about each other.

Questions for our brain, heart and soul to play with. She was no humpback nor orca, but she was larger than “Superior” and gentle, and looked very, very healthy. I caught glimpses of her back and her spray and to me she resembled more a sperm whale than any other kind, I wish I could have seen her unmistakable head.

Our encounter could have been just a coincidence, but I will settle for a social one, as she or he may have thought of us as a mother and her baby playfully swimming alongside.
