Fishing Report - August 2009

August is the beginning of High Season for fishing here in our World Class Fishing Grounds of Puerto Vallarta. Those interested in Sportfishing in Puerto Vallarta from Amateurs to Professional Anglers alike descend on our little corner of paradise every year around this time. Why, to take a shot, maybe a once in a lifetime opportunity shot at boating a Trophy Sized Game Fish!  Monster Yellowfin Tuna over 200 lbs, or a Black Marlin over 700 lbs! Fly Fishing for Sailfish or Bottom Fishing for Cubera Snapper or Dog Tooth Pargo, summer fishing is back in Puerto Vallarta!

As we see the water temperatures rise into the mid to upper 80’s Yellowfin Tuna and Black Marlin will be visiting the high spots at El Banco or in English; The Bank. I refer to this area as a Marlin McDonalds, fast food for trophy game fish for sure. Record breaking sized Dorado and of course the ever present Sailfish.

With the warmer currents from down south come the Flying Fish! Early August is bait city in Puerto Vallarta. This in turn brings in the larger fish and the cycle begins again.

With the versatile Corbeteña 35 miles out with the island or rock as we call it, the deep trough, and volcanic shallows about 30 ft deep, you’ve got the perfect conditions for World Record Hook-ups.  Yellowfin Tuna possibly in the 300 lb range and Black Marlin in the 900 to 1,000 lb outside range. Not common, but very possible. One thing for sure is, you’ll never know about any of this if you’re not out there!

Closer in Mahi Mahi or Dorado will be hanging out all around the bay. The Trash line Do-Dos as I call them are just what the doctor ordered. For those looking for a shorter day, smaller fish, but great tasting while staying on a budget, four hours on a Super Panga may be for you. North of Punta Mita just at the small islands off shore the Mahi Mahi or Dorado have been setting up house. Even days when the fish can’t be bothered, you can rely on these gold and blue beauties here to take your baits!
