Every
year between June through November hundreds of Olive
Ridley turtles (lepidochelys Olivacea) do their cyclic
process for laying their eggs on our beaches.
Marine Turtles have been living in
the oceans for at least 270 million years ago, and are
the true essence of the Jurassic times, these amazing
creatures have survived many geological and climate
changes during their survival period of time.
It has been until these days that
their presence in our planet is being threaten. Over
the last Hundred years over-exploitation, irrational
development and pollution have placed all of the eight
species of Marine Turtles on the world in the endangered
species list. Therefore unless strong measures are taken
we might gradually loose them from our planet in the
next twenty or thirty years.
Although
Mexico is one of the leading countries for Marine Turtles
Conservation, most efforts should reach public minds
all over the Country’s population.
Mexico’s geographical location
attracts most of the species during their nesting season,
with thousands miles of coastline on both the Pacific
and Atlantic Oceans. Seven of the eight species of Marine
Turtles in the world lay their eggs on Mexican beaches,
that indeed represent a huge responsibility to take
over for the future of these species.
Federal and Human resources are now
on their way with more than five hundred Turtle camps
on specific nesting sites all over the Nation’s
coast line. Biologists
and Volunteers develop the most significant job and
are really the unsung heroes in the Conservation projects
for marine Turtles in Mexico. Turtle Camps play a key
roll for the survival of the turtles with nursery facilities,
incubation sites and protection for the nests, they
make sure most of the hatchlings arrive safely into
the Sea, one of a hundred will eventually make it to
adultness.
At this point General Public is welcome
to participate in one of the greatest events in Nature,
being able to hold a baby turtle on our hands, sealed
with a kiss and wish them farewell, gives us the pleasure
to interact and understand this magnificent creatures,
it is also the experience of a lifetime.
