1, 2002. | Underwater Damage Caused by Hurricane
Kenna Professor Amílcar Cupul (Professor Fabio Cupul's
brother), researcher at the Coastal University Center of the University of Guadalajara,
talked in an interview last week about the damage caused by Hurricane Kenna to
marine life in the region. "The most affected zone is
the northern part of the bay. The storm's tide was estimated to have ranged between
six and ten feet, or two and four meters. The coral communities were most affected
in the Marieta Islands zone. Some of the coral in the Los Tules zone was practically
destroyed. Unlike an El Niño event, the destruction was quite dramatic
but the recuperation is faster than after an El Niño event," he said. Archives
