Compassion 4 Kids connected with the Vallarta based charity Mamás Unidas Por la Rehabilitación de Sus Hijos A.C (Pasitos de Luz) to fund a lifesaving operation for little José Manuel Reyes, “Manuelito” aged 6. Manuelito urgently needed an operation to fit a spinal fluid paediatric shunt. Although C4K in Indianapolis did immediately commit US$1,000 towards his operation, the C4K’s PV representative had to keep negotiating with the local medical professionals to lower the original quote (USD $2,500.00 plus the shunt). Shunt prices in the US reach USD $1K and for a single mom earning USD $50.00 a week, this was too much for Manuelito’s mother to contemplate. C4K medical team members pursued acquisition of the needed shunt in Indianapolis and, amazingly, 48 hours later had obtained 7 shunts, all donated! However, no international courier was able to guarantee delivery in time for Manuelito’s operation, with custom issue delays expected, and Manuelito fading fast, so…Julie Livingston, President of C4K, decided to hop on the plane from Indy to PV and deliver the shunts in person (her airfare being cheaper than the cost of purchasing one locally!!)
With the expertise of neurosurgeon Dr. Jorge Mendoza from CMQ Hospital, who worked free of charge, and his wonderful team of assistants, Manuelito was operated on last week at Medasist Hospital after they offered a superb discount of USD $900.00 All ended within budget and on time to save Manuelito! Due to poor living conditions in Manuelito’s home (no electricity, water or phone) he and his mother will remain recuperating at Pasitos de Luz for another week.
