Hook the Cure raises essential money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation

Puerto Vallarta (Mx) --- April 2009 — What started as a fishing trip among friends continues this year as one of the most successful fundraisers for cystic fibrosis. The fourth annual Hook the Cure, billed as the “Ultimate Fishing, Golf and Spa Adventure,” happens Nov. 5-8 in beautiful Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Guests stay in luxurious accommodations while enjoying golf, fishing and spa. To date, the event has raised close to $1,000,000 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Co-chairman Robert Huston has experienced the ups and downs of cystic fibrosis. His 10-year-old son, Will, has the disease but is able to play baseball and basketball thanks to treatments funded by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Sadly, Bob’s first cousin was not as fortunate and died at the age of 13 due to complications from the disease.

“My cousin didn’t have many opportunities because we didn’t have the treatments we have now,” Huston said. “Will is going to school, playing sports and has a 4.0 grade point average. I know that wasn’t possible when I was a kid.”

Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease affecting approximately 40,000 people in the United States and Mexico. A defect in the CF gene causes the body to produce abnormally thick, sticky mucus that leads to chronic, life-threatening lung infections and impairs digestion. When the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation was established in 1955, few children lived to attend elementary school. Today, because of money raised through donations from families, corporations and foundations, the life expectancy for people with CF is nearly 37 years.

Having served on the foundation’s board, Huston was looking for additional ways to raise money and awareness. On a fishing trip with friend Jeff Jennison, the two decided that “Hook the Cure” would be a great fundraiser for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

“They asked me to start an event and I know fishing,” Huston said. “Jeff is Will’s godfather and he was more than willing to help.”

The weekend includes more than fishing. Golf and spa packages are also available.

“In fact, we have more people that spa than golf or fish,” Huston said. “And it’s not just the women. There were plenty of men who came to the spa to unwind, as well. We feel the tournament would not be nearly as successful without the addition of the spa. It’s the perfect compliment to a day of fishing or golf.”
