Ramblings from the Great White North
I was listening to the news report
the other morning and wondered, how does one "shift"
$172 MILLION U.S. DOLLARS from a company's books? On
the other hand, I guess it must be an easy maneuver
in comparison with the "shift" of $3.8 BILLION
right?
And why am I carefully filing the $10. Peso receipts
I get from the airport parking lot?
I'm sending this in via Internet
from Montreal, Canada, where I have to be once a year
on business matters. This time of year here is the best
of all. It is said that Montreal has four seasons -
winter, winter, winter and the first weekend of August.
In reality, it's not quite that bad. As soon as the
thermometer rises above 0oC (usually sometime near the
end of April), Montrealers come out of their burrows,
throw their snow boots into the shed, slough off their
winter coats and go out into the light. Within a month
or so, tables appear on the sidewalks in front of every
café and restaurant in town, and one month later
the Festival Season begins. Starved for outdoor activities
(without layers and layers of clothes on), Montrealers
stage a citywide, summer-long party.
Now, please understand, I'm not going
to bore you with everything that goes on in this town,
nor am I trying to entice you to come up and visit it.
I am mentioning all this because I was thinking of the
discussions going on in the halls of Vallarta's City
Hall with regard to 1) turning the Malecon into a pedestrian
area, 2) building a parking lot at the northern entrance
to town to reduce the number of vehicles in the center,
3) purportedly reducing the number of buses going into
the center and, 4) issuing permits to establishments
-that have enough space- allowing them to set little
tables, chairs and umbrellas out on the sidewalk. Can
you imagine how great our little paradise would look
if all those matters were implemented? Just look at
what we call the "Zona Romantica", look at
Olas Altas Street. There's a reason why that street
has become such a favorite among both locals and tourists.
Besides the great little shops and restaurants located
there, it's the look of the place, the "feel"
of it.
Like that reader whose letter we
published last week, "I MISS VALLARTA!" This
happens to me every time I have to leave it, even if
it's only for a few days. I count the hours until I
can get back. Even after all these years, I haven't
been able to put my finger on what it is exactly, but
IT is there. Some sort of magical, magnetic attraction
that calls people back and back again to this little
corner of the world. It is unique, trust me. So, all
of you who are reading this IN Puerto Vallarta, enjoy
yourselves! Don't spend all your time within the confines
of your hotel. Get out there and see all that you can
see, do all that you can do! The choices are endless
and the rewards are great. Have a fabulous week!
Hasta luego!
