FESTIVAL GOURMET

Festival Gourmet 2007 - Brunch Gourmet at Flamingos

By mangoVallarta Gastronomy Paper / Photos By: Jesús de Avila - December 2007

Puerto Vallarta Photo ImageIn an unequaled scenery, feeling the white sand of the beach of Nuevo Vallarta at our feet, a gorgeous day of tropical Nayarit flavor gave a warm welcome to all the invited chefs, their hosts and the general public.

Regional dishes and champagne were the perfect complement to the upbeat talk among the Festival’sleading players who sooner than later confirmed the friendship born the prior night during the inauguration of the International Gourmet Festival 2007.

Under the bright sun that flirted with the faces covered by straw hats, palm trees, and pergolas laced with linen and cotton drapes decorating a great outdoor dining area, everybody felt how the fresh sea breeze softly bathed and refreshed them, an invitation to close their eyes while savoring the great variety of regional recipes offered by executive chef Miguel Velásquez Brito and his team of collaborators at Villa del Palmar Flamingos Resort & Spa, host hotel for the event.

Music, aromas, colors and flavors were the ingredients that made the difference in a day of unforgettable fiesta!

As the local chefs and the local restaurant owners escorted their guests, mingling with attendees from allsectors of society, public and private, you could almost picture the hand of a great chef adding more elements little by little, tocomplete a multi color salad dressed with the laughter and the humming of a great family feast orbiting around friendship and food.

Puerto Vallarta Photo ImageSoon the cocktails took a preponderant space as the talkative palates were quenched and surprised by the unique tastes of fried and “Zarandeado” (marinated and broiled Nayarit style) fish, seafood treats prepared in different styles, birria (the most typical dish from the State of Jalisco, originally prepared from goat but now from beef as well), cactus, guacamole, salads, sauces, beans, corn on the cob, ready made tortillas, beef and sausage tacos and many more regional dishes, and tempting desserts that were delicately and secretly devoured!

The constant expressions of joy and awe were the notes of harmony to the perfect symphony being performed by all on the site. Some stood motionless while savoring a mimosa, enraptured at the sight of all that was happening.. I was one of them (without the mimosa, though)

Puerto Vallarta Photo Image While for the invited chefs it was a great opportunity to meet and connect with another cultural facet of our country, for some vallartenses present it was a marvelous occasion to meet again and update on news and happenings.

For several hours life stood still so we could enjoy every single detail, every happening, either planned or spontaneous. Then came the time when the Mariachi Band lit up the Mexican passion while the regional dances spread the spirit through every corner of the place.

In a destination with such a culinary diversity and influence, you can witness a reunion of the like, and when it happens, you had better definitely be a part of it and enjoy it as those of us who had the lucky chance to experience this magnificent Brunch Gourmet.
