OUR TASTE

Marazul
By Eduardo Rincón-Gallardo mango – Vallarta Gourmet Paper  • Photos by Jesús de Avila • June 2009

In my search for special places, this time to celebrate a very special girl’s birthday, I found one venue that featured some of the magic elements that can Marazulblend into a great Vallarta dining experience: A sophisticated menu, a nice atmosphere and the wild and natural ambiance of our bay.

I found “Marazul” at the beginning (or the end, as we can be neighbors from either, north or south Vallarta) of Olas Altas Street along Los Muertos Beach. It is sheltered by a magnificent palapa and its subdued lighting lets your eyes savor the harmony created by dexterous native hands knitting together this cathedral-like dome made out of palm leaves. The floor’s polished cement and river rocks were gentle on our bare feet after a sunset walk on the beach, and as we arrived, a corner table on the wooden deck over the surf awaited us to cradle this very special moment of ours.

The location cannot be beat as it is right on the beach, on the corner linking Olas Altas Street and its charming sidewalk cafés, with the best known restaurants’ strip in Vallarta, Basilio Badillo StreetMarazul.

Along with a refreshing glass of Chilean white wine, we first had the robalo sashimi, and had trouble eating it; a sashimi, like a carpaccio, has to be made from very uniform slices of the back of the fish and this was not. But then came the scallops in a creamy herbs sauce and crab ravioli, so good, our mood mellowed with the flavors, the music, the natural feel of the deck on our feet and the loving and constant caress of the sea breeze.

But the ultimate thing was a grilled dorado bathed in a coriander curry that swept us away, this delicacy had us raving about this fortunate blend of ingredients.

The environment provided by the palapa, the subdued lighting, the mellow music and good service made for a very pleasant soirée, so we decided to treat ourselves to a moonlight walk on the beach to reminisce on this and many other blessings, topping off a great evening. Email to a friend
