SISTER CITIES

Some where alon the way...
Puerto Vallarta & Highland Park - October 2005

Somewhere along the way what began as a pooling of talent became a penchant for tolerance.
A wall begun by two ethnicities became a mural of acceptance
An exchange of cultures became a hunger for contact
The sharing of resources became sources of pride
A passing acquaintance became a fast friend
Committies of strangers became brotherhoods of go-getters impossibilities became realities
    Young sportsmen became youthful ambassadors
String musicians became inspirations to thousands
Culinary exchanges became aid to children in need
What was a meeting of minds was a melding of memories
The exchanges of city resources was really an exchange of our hearts
Somewhere along the way the "sister" in sister cities became a real family
Barbara Belmmont Member of the Higlnad Park Sister Cities Committee

This is a clear testimony of what those people who believe in sisterhood between cities and between people are able to create even when the majority of people in our present society struggle with believing that this could happen in our times. Just as Carol Wolf, president of the Committee of sister cities in Highland Park, mentions correctly: "this poem captures the love, the respect and the sisterhood which have been consolidated between our cities through the members of both committees."

Several years ago the adventure started by some enthusiastic and dreaming citizens wishing to form a sisterhood between Highland Park, Illinois and Puerto Vallarta. A lot has happened since then and there have been many people who have contributed with their intention and effort to the level of sisterhood which has been reached at present between these two cities, from where extraordinary opportunities of exchange, growth, development and productivity altogether can be observed.

To enumerate the true opportunities which this sisterhood has generated and continues to generate for both cities and especially for our city, would be a task that would require a lot of time to complete it. It is a fact that our future generations will also distinguish and will benefit from what the sisterhood between Highland Park and Puerto Vallarta is achieving.

The last of the activities between both cities was the visit of the committee of Puerto Vallarta as guests of the Art Festival of Port Clinton, accompanied by a select group of five local artists from Puerto Vallarta. On this occasion the sculpture of a bronze whale donated by the sculptor Octavio Gonzalez was revealed. From that moment on it is a new testimony of our sisterhood and above all of what the sisterhood represents for thousands of people in both cities.

The committee of Highland Park, led by its president Mrs. Carol Wolf will visit our city the next month of February and together with the committee of Puerto Vallarta they will carry out a very busy schedule of activities. Amongst them the following ones stand out: the presentation of the string orchestra of the city of Highland Park, directed by Mr. Larry Block, as well as the presentation of the dance group under the direction of Mary Jo Papich and a very special exhibition of paintings by the prestigious painters Sherri Tracey and Penélope Osio-Brown, which will take place in the rural studio and gallery of Ada Colorina. It may be distinguished that the scope of the programmed activities will allow the general society to enter in contact with, to interact with and to enjoy that which our sisters from Highland Park will share with us.

Acknowledgment of devotion and commitment
Puerto Vallarta & Highland Park - October 2005
By The Editor

Last Thursday, on September 22nd, during an emotive event celebrated in the meeting room of the City Hall in the presence of our mayor Mr. Gustavo Gonzalez Villaseñor, the Committee of Sister Cities of Puerto Vallarta, headed by Mrs. Ana Maria Flores, handed over very special acknowledgments to all those people that contributed unselfishly and in a relevant way so that the children's baseball team could visit Highland Park during the month of July where it participated - representing our community - in a tournament organized especially for this occasion as well as in the commemorative independence day parade of the United States of America.

Besides being thankful in a very emotive way Mrs. Ana Maria Floressingled out that thanks to the devotion and exceptional labor of Ruben Cham who is also a member of the committee, an art auction was carried out with the purpose of helping the cause of the children. Thanks to the support of galleries and artists which were given their acknowledgement, too, the auction was a very exiting and productive experience, to such a degree that the next one is already being scheduled for the month of February.

The event was the perfect frame for the mayor, who was being acknowledged for his contribution and support of the committee of Sister Cities, to share touchingly with everyone present one of the experiences during his childhood that motivated his desire and commitment to contribute some day so that the children and the youth of the community would also have the opportunity - just as he had - to participate in this type of social, cultural and sports exchange. Addressing the children that were present he said that he is convinced that the work that the Committee of the Sister Cities has been carrying out, is framing a path which without any doubt should be followed by everyone. "I firmly believe that the sisterhood between cities is one of the most effective means that men can use in order to offer us and to open us up to a new world of possibilities with an unimaginable range for growth and social, sport, cultural and business development." To end he commented while addressing Mrs. Ana Maria: "The fruits of the relationship between the sister cities of Puerto Vallarta and especially with Highland Park are fundamental so that my commitment of my support for you may continue".

During this meeting the last visit to Highland Park was mentioned again and an acknowledgement was presented to the sculptor Octavio Gonzalez who created and donated the sculpture of the whale which now has already been placed in front of the train station of that city on one of their main avenues.
