Boca Bento Latin-Asian Cuisine. the new kid on the street! |
By: The Editor - April 2005 |
Hearing that a new restaurant has opened in Vallarta is not a novelty, what would be a piece of news is if that new place would turn out to be something truly exceptional, and without any doubt Boca Bento has been a novel and exquisite happening.
In order to make the arrival more exciting his owner has decided to place his restaurant on the Basilio Badillo street, known as the street of the cafes and restaurants where competitiveness is seriously hard.
The first thing that attracted my attention is that in a very simple and at the same time very spectacular way, the investment to transform the place has been worthwhile. For a long time, the house where Boba Bento is located today has been another prestigious restaurant with a swimming-pool in the middle of its main patio, which as a matter of fact was one of the attractions of the place, however now this same pool has disappeared in order to make room for a daring space, where - surrounded by walls decorated with mirrors - simplicity, elegance and sensuality invade every corner of the restaurant. At the same time they permeate the clients that visit the place. Without ruffling the senses, from the moment you arrive at the restaurant a constant movement is perceived, which shows the acceptance the place has had amongst visitors and locals.
The cuisine is a Latin-Asian fusion that starts with a spectacular presentation served "Tapas" style, that surprises and conquers even the most demanding client. The flavor of each dish, that comes from the fusion of the ingredients and the way they are cooked, is exquisitely difficult to describe.
We started the adventure of flavors with a "Spinach Salad with Sesame Chili Dressing, Toasted Walnuts, Mushroom and Crispy Bacon Bits" which turned out to be the most exotic salad we had tried in the city up to now. We continued with an order of "Szechwan Shrimp Wonton Purses with Poblano Cream Sauce" that proved to be a mixture of flavors where the very Mexican chile poblano prevailed in the palate generating the arising of a slight desire for wanting more of the same. We decided at that time to try something different and "Seared Filet of Mahi-Mahi with Steamed Rice, Plantains and Lemongrass-soy Sauce" was carried to our table. It was an incredible surprise of a wild taste [ according to me that is the description that comes closest to define what is generated by sampling this super delicious dish ]. Claudia and I shared every order and by that time we felt that we had enough. Nevertheless hypnotized by the savoriness, we decided to sacrifice ourselves and lastly we ordered a "Grilled Beef Medallion, Wassabi Potato Puree in a Pasilla Chile Sauce with Fire Roasted Vegetables" that was a perfect culmination of an evening, leaving us impregnated with Asia and Mexico .
We were having our last bites, when Stewart Haverlack and his lovely wife Monica approached our table to present themselves and to ask for feed-back on our dinner, the atmosphere and the service of the place. We told them that we were delighted with the place, satisfied with the service and that above all, we marveled at the cuisine. Then Stewart joyfully shared with us a little bit of his history and his objectives for opening the restaurant.
We were about to ask for the bill when a detail, called "Passion fruit of Black Sesame and Galeto" arrived at our table, a courtesy sent by Steward and Monica. The incredible thing about it was the fact that we actually finished it. Most certainly it was a sensual and exquisite end of the evening.
We paid approximately $550.00 Pesos including non-alcoholic beverages. In my opinion and in accordance with the size of the portions, their presentation and above all their fantastic taste, it was worth every cent! It had been a while since I had left a new restaurant in Vallarta feeling so pleased.
Congratulations to Steward and Monica. Thank you for contributing to enhance our prestige as a world-wide gastronomical destination.
