Carmen Porras - Selected as a member of the
Mexican Delegation to Terra Madre.

By: Patrick Harrison

PUERTO VALLARTA, MX – Carmen Porras, owner of Vallarta’s favorite Mexican Restaurant, El Arrayan, has been selected as a member of the Mexican Delegation to Terra Madre, 2006 in Italy. Terra Madre, the second world meeting of Food Communities, is to be held in Turin, Italy October 26-30. The meeting will bring together diverse representatives of food and agriculture production from around the world, to discuss the complex nature of producing good quality food on a small scale - paying attention to responsible use of natural resources, regionality, the sensory qualities of the product, the fair treatment of workers and consumer health.  Carmen is the only representative of the Mexican Delegation from the state of Jalisco and Banderas Bay.

The event is centered around producers, cooks and researchers from 150 different nations to be represented by roughly 6000 representatives of 1500 food communities, 1000 cooks and 400 university researchers and professors; all involved in constructive dialogue. “I am honored to represent our region in such an important event,” stated Carmen. “What interests me most is the different creative ways restaurateurs have come up with, connecting their peers and the general public directly to the producers, and how important it is to educate the younger generations in caring about our culinary background, what our grandmothers cook, and what we grew up eating.”

El Arrayan, dedicated to protecting the enjoyment of great food while defending the Mexican cultural identity tied to food and cooking traditions, is now pioneering the “Slow Food” movement in Banderas Bay. With over 83,000 members world-wide, Slow Food links pleasure and food with awareness and responsibility. They seek to defend biodiversity in our food supply, spread the education of taste, and link producers of excellent foods to consumers through events and initiatives.

El Arrayan is proud to not only serve you amazing traditional foods from different regions of Mexico, but also teach you the history of the foods, their origins and stories.  By exploring their website - www.elarrayan.com.mx - you’ll discover a treasure trove of interesting facts and tidbits about the dishes served and ingredients used at El Arrayan.

Come enjoy and discover for yourself what great food is all about! El Arrayan is Downtown at 344 Allende, a short stroll from the Malecon. Open Wed. - Mon 6pm to 11 pm.  Closed on Tuesdays. Reservations at 222-7195.
