RESTAURANT REVIEW

The River Café - An Exquisite Re-encounter

Text and photos by Jesús de Avila - July 2007

After a considerable time I returned to this spacious restaurant located at a beautiful space on the island that is surrounded by an exuberant environment, and is always caressed by the soft and constant murmur of the running water of the Cuale river.

We were received cordially and from that moment on we were enveloped in the atmosphere of the place. We started by ordering 2 virgin kiwi daiquiri cocktails and while reading the menu it dawned on me that it would be difficult to choose between the select list of dishes.

Montserrat and I decided to share a succulent entrance of "Smoked and marinated Pepper Salmon served on potato blini with fine herb cheese and a chile de arbol vinaigrette”. From then on we perceived that the flavor of the evening would be exquisitely perfect. We continued sharing a thick and delicious "Mushroom and wild fungus cream soup" that definitively captivated us.

One main dish was "Fettuccini with clams, shrimp, mussels and mushrooms sautéed with garlic, basil pesto and champagne sauce", impregnating our palate with a surprising and very scant flavor of sweet sea, which was the result of the perfect combination of the seafood in the sauce. The other main dish was a "Fresh grilled papaya and tuna fish fillet with Quimixto vinaigrette” that turned out to be a colorful and fantastic combination where the fruit ―without smothering the unmistakable flavor of the grilled tuna― offered tropical flashes bathing our taste buds while savoring each mouthful.

With its warm walls and perfect illumination, The River Café is a beautiful scene where the live music interpreted by Beverly & Willow floats in the atmosphere filling each corner with romance.

The options for dessert are so tempting that it is inevitable to sin. In the wine cellar of the River Café you can find a select range of wines with an emphasis on Chileans, Australians and Italian wines.

We were so enchanted that we did not realize that almost three hours had passed and we decided that it was time to go, leaving behind a place that will see us come back very soon.

The River Café is located at Isla Rio Cuale No. 4, Downtown Puerto Vallarta. Open every day for breakfast, lunch and dinner. To learn more about their menu and/or make a reservation please visit: http://www.rivercafe.com.mx
