RESTAURANT REVIEW

Kaiser Maximilian, a Restaurant with Austrian Flavors and Attitude

By Jesus de Avila - August 2007

We arrived at the doors of Kaiser Maximilian, a pioneer restaurant in the Olas Altas area, a place with a defined identity and a fine dining lovers’ favorite in town, who by the way, are the best promoters of the place and have grown to be friends of restaurant owner Andreas Rupprechter’s.

There are lots to say about Kaiser Maximilian; this time, however, I’ll focus on sharing my dining experience.

To start, Letty had to have her favorite appetizer, the “Tequila Glazed Crab Cake with avocado pure and glass leeks”; just from its elegant presentation, it appears to be bound to be enjoyed to the last mouthful. Which it was! I felt daring and ordered “Red cabbage cream with potato roasted duck crust meatball”, which turned out to be a dramatic adventure that allowed me to discover a fascinating red color which captured my eye and a new, impregnating flavor to which my taste buds rapidly assimilated. I’m a discriminating lover of creams and I had never been this satisfied before. The combination of red cabbage with a bit of beet, gives life to that intense red color, and the red wine vinegar marinade is the soul of the flavor that subtly adheres to the palate after every mouthful.

For main course, Letty indulged herself in “Goat cheese with tomato ragout, fine lettuces and beet”, while I chose “Wienerschnitzel, breaded scallops with potatoes and Austrian salad”.

The specialty of the restaurant is contemporary Austrian cuisine, and it distinguishes itself for its variety of meals like duck, veal, lamb, beef, venison, trout, salmon and sea bass, among others. The quality of the products and ingredients used is manifest in every recipe, and is matched by the excellent, amiable service from the staff.

The restaurant is named after Austrian Archduke Maximilian Joseph von Habsburg, Emperor of Mexico. Some decorative details are evocative of those times of European glamour and the casual elegant ambience is perfect for a romantic evening by the ample windows, or to enjoy a family dinner or an evening out with friends.

Nothing happens by chance at Kaiser Maximilian. Its owner personally oversees the aspects that have made it one of the top ten restaurants in town, a consistent participant in the Gourmet Festival that takes place in November. Kaiser Maximilian is the only restaurant in town to be listed in the Directory of Distinguished Restaurants of North America (DIRoNA). A novelty we found is that it is now possible to make reservations for Kaiser Maximilian through OpenTable.com quite convenient given the popularity of the place.

We ended our dinner experience in pleasant conversation to an exquisite coffee, and we promised Luis, our friendly waiter, to be back with the city bus behind us. (An inside joke you’ll have to discover when you dine at Maximilian… by asking Luis)
