OUR TASTE

VALLARTA FOODIE

A sleeping shrimp. will be eaten in a cocktail!
By Jesús de Avila - October, 2007.

The shrimpcocktail is a simple, though delicious treat, very popular in our country and it is those of us living on the coast who brag about having the best, most original, fresh and succulent.

Basic preparation consists of boiling in water, equal to al regions, nonetheless, how and for how long, as well as its combination with other ingredientsand its presentation upon being served, offer plenty of opportunities to present a variety of flavors and textures to be discovered, and all stemming from just one recipe!

In Puerto Vallarta there is an unlimited number of places where you can have a shrimp cocktail, some of them well renowned, however, I should mention to you that a longstanding tradition places Ocho Tostadas above all. Just what makes this place the favorite to many, among them me, to go for a shrimp cocktail?

First of all I will tell you that the quality, size, freshness and term of cooking, give it a flavor distinguished for its consistency. Another element is the way it is served, while most places serve it in a glass, Ocho Tostadas serves it in a clay bowl. Some say it is here that this tradition was born in our town.

It will be served to your taste, either dry, as a salad, or with a hot or cold stew; chopped onion, tomato, cucumber and avocado. You can order a small one [$64.00 Pesos], medium [$79.00 pesos], or large [$95.00 pesos]. You will also always find Worcestershire sauce, olive oil, kétchup, pepper, hot sauces, salt and Mexican sauce on your table.

So, small, medium or large, besides shrimp cocktail, in Ocho Tostadas you can find other delicacies from the sea, be it octopus, scallops, fish ceviche and a good variety of griddle-cooked dishes.

There are presently four Ocho Tostadas out of which two are located in Puerto Vallarta, one in Marina Vallarta and one in Nuevo Vallarta. My favorite one is the one catered to by Freddie and his wife Cynthia, behind the local stadium, though I should note that the shrimp cocktail has the very same consistency in all, as all respect the original process instituted by Mr.Jacinto Macedo who started the business thirty-eight years ago!

Another version of the shrimp cocktail is the “agua-chile” [$95.00 pesos] which requires being cooked with lime juice that you can also enjoy at Ocho Tostadas.
