RESTAURANT REVIEW

The Unplanned…
By mangoVallarta Gastronomy Paper | Translation by Eduardo Rincón-Gallardo – March 2008

Strolling ‘round downtown PV and visiting La Cruz…

At the start of the month, before a photography session of paintings among which were some of the works of the renown painter David Villaseñor, my great friend Mauricio Ibarra invited me for lunch at his brother Diego’s restaurant “DD Sushi”, located on Libertad 282-A [between the streets of Matamoros and Hidalgo] in front of Estela Camacho’s (Mauricio’s mom) Mexican Popular Art Gallery. Focusing on food, let me share with you that this is a restaurant with an excellent Japanese cuisine proposal. As suggested by Mauricio I tried the crunchy Fura Maki – Breaded roll of shrimp, cheese and cucumber [$65.00 pesos], as well as the interestingly juicy and delicious Yokohama – Cheese, avocado, pumpkin and crab stuffed roll, with baked salmon, coriander sauce, eel sauce and black sesame seeds on the outside [90.00 Pesos], and a generous and nutritious Mongol Bowl – Pasta, vegetables, shrimp, chicken and meat, cooked with oyster sauce [$80.00], this is an invention by Diego. Taking into consideration the generous portions and their seasoning I can assure you it will be worthwhile to consider this place for lunch during a day of strolling or shopping downtown.

A few days later, after hearing about the impressive advance of the marina at La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, we decided to go for a stroll out there. The place is definitely unrecognizable now, I am sure a few years ago no one in town imagined what would happen to this zone. Soon I will write an editorial dedicated to the great project being developed here. After seeing the sun disappear beyond the horizon we agreed to put the pizzas at Frascati restaurant to the test. Please note this restaurant participated in the Festival Gourmet last year. I must say the service was first class from the beginning. It is a large, well designed patio, romantically illuminated and flooded by a good taste and casual ambiance. The restaurant also has reserved a space as a gallery called “Plaza Bella” with fine handcrafts from diverse areas of Mexico and decorative elements for sale. The menu offers approximately forty dishes, some of them so attractive as to almost make me hesitate, nonetheless I stood by my original plan and for starters we had “Pizza Margherita” [$108.00 pesos] it melted in the mouth. It was as tasty as light, so much so that we continued on with a “Pizza Quattro Stagioni” [$136.00 pesos] which kept us alert identifying and enjoying the four-cheese combination.  The dough is slim, consistent and its presentation on a wood-board acts as an added accent to this place’s atmosphere, rich with aromas from the delicacies being cooked in the furnace, well within the view of diners. Frascati is building a good reputation and is definitely worth the visit. I recommend you make your reservation at: [329] 295-6185

Last weekend while thinking of buying something to go and dining at home we decided to go  to La Piazzetta, located in the colorful and buzzing “Plaza Costa Alegre” on Olas Altas street, between the streets of Rodolfo Gómez and Francisca Rodríguez, in the Zona Romántica. After finding a parking spot (something that can be quite challenging around this area), a few steps before arriving at the plaza I discovered  that  Karpathos Greek restaurant had disappeared to make room for Angelo’s [another Italian in the zone], which in fact was half a block away from this new location, and where another new restaurant has also opened. What called on my attention was the Pizza Gourmet offered in their menu, so, full of curiosity, we changed plans and decided to buy our dinner there. After hearing it from the chef that they call it Pizza Gourmet due to its different combination of ingredients, never before seen (at least in Vallarta), we went for the medium-size Hawaiian [$169.00 pesos], featuring champignons and pepperoni besides the traditional ham and pineapple. The outcome was a pizza with a sufficient quantity of ingredients… good.

The best of that night was, first, the stroll around the plaza, as it showed us some of the action happening there every night and it also allowed for the discovery of other gastronomic corners to visit in the future. The second best were the two artesian chocolates we bought at Xocodiva for dessert; one espresso [muy sabroso!] and one caramel-walnut. They are definitely worth the $30.00 pesos we paid for them.
