| De Santos! | by
Anna Reisman December 22, 2002. | This
eclectic restaurant-bar will be celebrating its 3rd Anniversary this week, and
it's going to be a bash and a half! Ever since it opened this
has been a favorite hang-out for locals -and tourists in the know- looking for
a place where, to quote the owners, they may "feel free and spontaneous,
dance, laugh and smile, and leave their daily routine behind to enter a special
and magical world of joy and delight." In the early
evening, those hours during which we foreigners are used to having dinner, the
place is a cool, elegant setting for excellent cuisine and relaxing music. As
the bewitching hour approaches, around 11 o'clock, de Santos undergoes a total
metamorphosis, converting itself into a lounge filled with all the beautiful (young)
people in town. And the music changes accordingly. de
Santos is fun! It's the kind of place everyone enjoys, young and old alike. It's
all a matter of timing. Located right in the heart of
town, the place is bright, impeccably clean and stark. There are no paintings
on the walls, but the light sconces and the immense mirror on the back wall facing
the bar give it an unmistakable touch of Art Déco. I happen to love it.
It makes you feel happy. Many members of the foreign community in Puerto Vallarta,
those who live here year-round, are regulars at de Santos but they don't like
to share their secret with "outsiders"
Now
to the other aspects: the prices and the food. Both score tops. Here's another
place whose wise owners have realized that good food, good service and reasonable
prices are the way to go for a restaurant in this town to be successful. The service?
Well, de Santos employs young waiters, friendly and with a wonderful sense of
humor. These easygoing youngsters are usually dressed in T-shirts, pants and aprons,
all are perfectly bilingual and their service is excellent. This
Friday, December 27th, de Santos will be celebrating its 3rd anniversary with
the inauguration of their Club, adjacent to the restaurant, where they will feature
famous international DJ's until the end of the month. From
now until New Year's, they have also invited three guest chefs who promise to
make any dinner there a memorable experience. On the New Year's Eve menu, you
will find dishes like the "shrimp and calamari wraps" served with peanut
sauce and green papaya relish, a succulent cream of seafood soup, seared tuna
steak, medallions of beef in a Romesco sauce, pear almond tart, etc. etc. Enough
to make your mouth water. Definitely an option to consider! De
Santos is ideally located, away from the hustle and bustle of the Malecon, it's
unpretentious and laid back, the food is great, the place is delightful... What
more can I say? Go treat yourselves. De Santos Restaurant
is at 771 Morelos, and their phone numbers are: 223-3052/3 and 223-3875. pvmomto3@hotmail.com
