VALLARTA MEMORIES

First means of private and public transportation, 1941

November, 2004
From the Book "Puerto Vallarta My Memories" - [Leer en español]

There were only two private cars in town. One was a 1934 Plymouth convertible, property of agronomist engineer Pedro Pablo Zetina, who later sold his car to Salvador Preciado or El Güero, as everybody called him.

The firs operating taxicab in Vallarta in 1945 was a 1935 Plymouth . The crossing the river. Local people nicknamed the taxi "El Alcahuete" (the pimp), because clandestine lovers who met in cheap motels or hideaway places, away from the public eye, often used the taxi. The car was the talk of the town.

In 1948 the state government granted four public transportation permits to Salvador Sólorzano Forbes, Dr. José Maria Guillén, Señor Jesús Esqueda and Doña Eloiosita Peña.

The firs taxi drivers were young locals Carlos Gómez, Miguel Macedo known as El Rata, and Jesús Villalvazo.

There were only a few families who could afford the luxury of having private cars. Señor Carlos Garduño Mejia and Salvador Sólorzano Forbes were the first car owners. They both had 1934 Chevrolets. The Garduños car was nicknamed the Moco Verde (The green Snot) La Cafetera [The Teapot) because it whistled every time the engines started.

Doctor Sahagún drove a brand new convertible car.

In 1951 the first Syndicate of Rental Automobiles was Señor Salvador Preciado Peña. Salvador purchased a 1951 Ford pick-up truck with a sitting capacity of 14 people. The first route to operate was Los Muertos beach, Los Bules, Airport and Centro. Later, in 1960, Salvador extended his bus route operating with a bigger, 35-passenger capacity bus. The bus covered urban routes with added service to el Pitillal.

At present, there are approximate over 800 cars, 34 urban buses and several rental cars within the City. Different people own transportation companies. The buses travel routes all over the city, including some neighboring town.
