VALLARTA MEMORIES

History of Industrialization 1941

January, 2005
From the Book "Puerto Vallarta My Memories" - [Leer en español]

Señor Ignacio Mora was Mayor of Vallarta en 1941. Señor Mora was a farmer who loved doing land work. During his tenure, important events developed. He received and granted the petition for a home development to a group of tenant farmers from the Cuale mineral area.

"El Klan" club. From left to right: Luis Izaguirre, customs agent, Don Ponciano Guzmán y Guzmán, fishing inspector, Doctor José María Guillén, Sabas Ibarra, postal worker, and Señor Perujo, who was a Spanish refugee.

A group of young Spanish stayed and worked in Vallarta for many years. Among the young refugees I remember Perujo, Talallero, Don fructuoso and others. I had the opportunity to meet a lot of new people through being in the pharmacy. It was the first stop fir many travelers.

Doctor José María Guillén from Guadalajara came to Vallarta in the same year. He met my husband and immediately established a friendly medical, professional relations with him. Doctor Guillén started his practice from our pharmacy and stayed at Doña Eloisita's boarding home.

People who came to Vallarta from out of town got acquainted with locals rapidly. There were not too many places to go out for fun. It was a "must" to socialize or else be lonely. Dr. Guillén made new friends with all the other young men who stayed at Doña Eloisita's Casa de Asistencia. The young men formed a circle of friends and called it "El Klan". They always went out together. Among the group were Don Ponciano Guzman y Guzman from Mascota, Jalisco, who was a Fishing inspector; Sabás Ibarra, a postal worker, Luis Izaguirre, a Customs agent, and the group of Spaniards.

It was the best time to live in Puerto Vallarta . Our town had a healthy atmosphere, provincial flair, the people were warm and very friendly, and everyone lived at ease. It was far from the hectic life of the big city. That's the way Vallarta was.

Doctor Guillén, a newcomer who soon became a part of the society, played an important role on the social and political development of this town. Later in this book I will talk about Guillén´s important role in the community.

Guillén married Mercedes Baumgarten Joya in 1944. She was a young local socialite. Her parents were our Compradres, José and Julia, who passed away.
