VALLARTA MEMORIES

Community ladies do charity work

June, 2005

In 1935 the first Mexican Women's Catholic Union was formed. The group drew many local ladies such as doña Clotilde Miranda de Macedo, Elvira Palacios, Beatriz Garibaldi, Lupe de Quintero, María y Victoria Covarrubias, Chole Santana, Lupe de Macedo, doña Julia Chavarín, doña Lola López, Lupe de Ortega and doña María Parada.

The committee was dividing in various sections, such as school action, spiritual help, religious instruction or cathequism etc. most of the ladies volunteered their valuable time to help charitable deeds.

Father Parra was a special devotee of Our Holy Lady of Guadalupe. He promoted sending the ladies of the Women's Catholic Action to every household in Vallarta to spread the Catholic faith taking the images of the Holy Lady of Guadalupe, and Sacred Heart of Jesus. During their visits, the volunteer ladies reported a high level of couples living together out of wedlock.

As part of their noble cause, they encouraged many couples to legalize their union. The local volunteer ladies worked also in school related areas, contributing with their time and funds.

Amongst the Women's Catholic Action organization, I remember to Chole Santana as an active part of the organization. Chole and other ladies would do fundraising cookouts consisting of tamales, tostadas, and pozole. The funds were to support a small private school for the community, which later would become Colegio Niños Heroes. Señora Esther Hernandez from Tepic, Nayarit, was the first teacher at the little school.
