VALLARTA MEMORIES

XEW Radio promotes Vallarta 1949

From the Book "Puerto Vallarta My Memories" - [Leer en Español]
November 2005

It was around September of 1949 when I felt I needed to do something outstanding to promote the name of our town. I found the answer when I entered a contest at XEW radio in Mexico city. XEW radio, in prestigious radio station, invited people to participate on a poetry contest for their weekly special program titled Mexico Es Asi.

The first prize awarded to the best essay or poem describing the hometown of the participants would be a Marvin brand wristwatch.

After listening to La Hora Marvin every Thursday awarding the first prizes to essays that described in detail beautiful place in Mexico, I sent my essay about Puerto Vallarta to XEW radio. I was not only ecstatic to learn I had won first place, nut to know that I could contribute to promote Vallarta nationwide! The program was broadcast all over Mexico and it read as follows:

By Catalina Montes de Oca de Contreras:

Las Peñas was the old name of a small town, which is presently knows as Puerto Vallarta. Anyone can find a beautiful small tourist town grown big in popularity named. PUERTO VALLARTA! It is located in the heart of Bay of Flags between Punta Mita and Cabo Corrientes.

Punta Mita, located at the tip of the Bay of Flags, is a town full of legends. The legends are folk stories about buried pirate treasures, imaginary castles and enchanted. Temples. They are mirages created when rays of light at sunrise reflect reflect on the ocean waters, and add a touch of magic.

Cabo Corrientes (Cape Currents) is located south of the bay. It has a magnificent lighthouse, which serves as guidance and hope to all sailors.

In the center of the bay is beautiful Puerto Vallarta. Creeks that originate at the mountains of Cuale Mineral area, run down melodically to merge with the ocean, abundant of pristine, sparkling water. The riverbeds are adorned with rustic ramada shades, where women, protect themselves from the sunrays and wash clothes the old flashing way. A cotton-field look is display when women lay clothes to dry on top of light toned flat stones making a beautiful luscious green vegetation of exuberant beauty and majestic palm trees with a prismatic of emerald tones tones in different shades of greens. El Cerro del Vigia (Vigilant Hill) is located on the Westside of Vallarta, and has a big holy cross built-in the center as a symbol of Christianity. At the top of the hill there is a spectacular view of the whole town, with bright-white painted homes and red roofs. The Church tower stands out. It is the home where we venerate our patron, the Holy Lady of Guadalupe or Virgin of Tepeyac. The streets of Vallarta, although narrow, rustic, and stone paved, they are always impeccably clean adding great country flair to the town. Some avenues are graced with aromatic blossom trees that bloom every spring season.

Amidst the prevailing silence at Bay of Flags, the sight of fishing boats gliding on the ocean waters is as beautiful as swans swimming on a pond. Fishermen go to sea before sunrise, and they lay their hopes and prayers in the immensity of the ocean waters.

In the evenings, when the sunrays start agonizing in the gray mantle of the sky, the bay come back to life in a gamma of colors. Whoever witnesses this symphony of colors cannot help but looking up at the sky and letting out a sigh and a prayer to God.

On full moon nights, the Port is covered with mystery. Couples in love rendezvous at the Malecon under the perfect setting of beautifully lined palm trees glowing with silver moonlight and the almost invasive sounds of the ocean. It might seem at times that the ocean is determined to break its own monotony disturbing the harmony with strong beautiful landscaping to human eyes and ears.

That is my Vallarta, my dearest place ever. The original name was changed, but not the enchantment of this town.

This essay won the first place on the contest of "Mexico es así", sponsored by XEW radio broadcasting in Mexico City. The program aired on September 30, 1949. Señor Manuel Bernal read the winner essay on the radio. The first prize was a Marvin brend wristwatch.
