VALLARTA MEMORIES

First Tourist Guide 1957

From the book "Puerto Vallarta My Memories" - March 2006 - Leer en español

For a long time, my daughter, Yolanda, and I were toying with the idea of writing a tourist guide about Puerto Vallarta. The purpose was to help the visitors to know Vallarta better and also to promote our town nationwide.

The process of writing and publishing the guide was long and strenuous. We were inexperienced, and did not have any orientation from anybody. The only thing we knew was that we had willpower.

After overcoming a lot of obstacles, we finally finished the project and it gave us a great feeling of accomplishment.

Daniel Lechón, a famous artist helped us with the format. Captain Antonio Moll Gil, my son-in-law, took me to Guadalajara and introduced me to Señor Rogelio Alvarez, member of the council and an executive of the planning Department for Coastal Jalisco. He was a very nice and well-mannered man.

Señor Alvarez congratulated us and encouraged us to finish our project. Planning Commission for Coastal Jalisco.  Señor Alvarez and his wife became good friends of mine.

The tourist guide was done with graphic arts. The first edition was 5,000 copies. I received the first copy in the beginning of 1958. A second edition of 20,000 copies went to print in 1962. This time our sponsor was State Senator, Don Manuel Moreno Sanchez. The cover of the tourist guide was a beautiful painting made by Daniel Lechón. The guide was distributed internationally. A third and last edition went to print in 1967. The cover was a painting made by famous local artist Manual Martinez Peña.

In 1971, I received an award from the Honorable State Government in recognition of writing the first tourist guide of Puerto Vallarta in 1958, and for my efforts to promote tourism. Hugo Padilla Urtaza, Head of the Department, signed the award.
