In 1953 the mayor of Vallarta was Señor J. Jesús Palacios Robles.
View of Hidalgo Park. The old cementery is in the backgroundThe inauguration of Hidalgo Park took place on May 8, 1954. Our Mayor unveiled a statue in honor of Reverend Hidalgo. The bottom of the statue had a plaque marking the CCI (Two Hundred and one) anniversary of Hidalgo’s birth date.
Dr. Manuel Baumgarten Joya was the program organizer. Attorney, Señor Luis Páez Puerta, gave a speech at the opening ceremony.
In July the same year, Mayor of Vallarta Señor J. Jesús Palacios Robles died in a plane accident when taking some prisoners to Guadalajara city. The plane crashed at Cerro Del Cabro (Goat’s Mountain,) a mountain of approximately 2000 meters height. There were no survivors. Palacios died before he finished his tenure as a Mayor. The bodies recovered from the plane crash were burnt beyond recognition.
The local people mourned his death and those of the other crash victims. May they rest in Peace.
