The twister that menaced landing in Vallarta
It was a gloomy afternoon on the 27th of October 1959. the sky was steel-gray, dark. I was on the terrace looking at the ocean when, teerritied, I saw a Culebra de Agua (water snake) or tornado coming towards us. Minute by minute it was growing wider, threatening to land on the Bay.
Local people ran scared in circles not knowing what to do. Some people caught the phenomenon on camera. (See picture in next page).
I ran to the penthouse where my young grandchildren were playing happily, far removed from concern over nature’s forces. I was very scared and felt that I transmitted my fear to the children. They ran to hug me in despair. I took Enrique, my youngest grandchild, up in arms and holding his little hand I put a knife between his right hand and mini, clasping our hands together. I then directed him towards the tornado marking the sign of the cross. Miraculously, the tornado started getting weaker until it vanished. We knew if it had landed on Vallarta, we wouldn’t be telling about it!
I heard Father Parra had done the same act of the cross with a knife from the Church tower. I trust our prayer saved us. The next day we learned a neighboring town of Manzanillo was hardly hit by the hurricane.
