Señor Don Juan Martinez Perales was the Mayor of Vallarta from 1959 to 1961. our State Governor was Señor Don Juan Gil Preciado.
At this time, the population of Emiliano Zapata colony located south of Vallarta across, the Cuale River had increased dramatically.
The hanging bridge was sufficient during dry season but obsolete during monsoons, when inches of rain made the town was left stranded without communication. A group of local people led by Engineer, Marcial Resendiz Galvan, presented a project a new bridge to the authorities. Resendiz Galvan worked very hard raising funds for the construction of the new bridge. In the beginning there was some resistance from the authorities, but finally, the building permit was approved.
The new Board for the construction of the bridge comprised Director, Engineer Marcial Reséndiz Galvan, Treasurer, Juan Peña Dávalos, and member councils, Maximo Cornejo Quiroz, Carlos Arreola Lima and Oscar Rosales. The objective was to build the bridge fast before the monsoons would start. There had been flooding issues in 1958. A solution had to be found before it overflowed again.
Although directed the project, the whole community contributed to the completion of the bridge. The valuable collaboration of general contractors, carpenters, welders, and others who offered their tree services, made the bridge over Cuale River possible. There were so many people working at times that it looked like an anthill. Some locals would contribute with bricks and others sand and cement. Everyone was glad to help with the titanic project. It represented one of the major assets ever for Puerto Vallarta. During a visit to Vallarta, our State Governor, Señor Don Juan Gil Preciado, donated beams. Our benefactor, Señor Agustín Flores, donated the cement. What seemed to be an impossible mission was completed in 90 days. It was incredible!
At the bottom of the bridge there is a plaque that reads …“this Bridge is a good example of the joined forces of people and government. October 1959.”
