During many years the only communication we had available was the telegraph wire system. In cases of emergency the airlines would let us use their radio to call for help, but this did not happen very often.
In 1963, Mayor of Vallarta, Carlos Arreola Lima, tested a new radiotelephony system at Cinema Morelos. He talked to State Governor Professor Juan Gil Preciado. The test was successfully completed.
It wasn’t until November, that a brand new public radiophone system was faculty, same able to communicate with the rest of the country and within the same continent. There was only one radiophone available for public use, and the line was faulty. It was difficult to hear the other person and we had to yell o be heard. I remember seeing people waiting in long lines to call friends and relatives. The was no privacy whatsoever! People, who were waiting for a turn to call, could listen to every single word the other person said on the phone. Nevertheless, it was a great step towards long distance communication.
In September 1964 another radiotelephone for public use was installed at the Telegraph’s offices on Iturbide Street (the building was later demolished to give place to the New City Hall Facility).
We were excited about the grand opening of the first public telephone booth of Telefonos de Mexico Company on April 30, 1966. Mayor Oscar Rosales made the first call to Sub-Secretary, Attorney J. Jesus Bueno, a State official representative.
The new telephone system for public use was located at the corner of Juárez and Mina streets. People were able to make national and international calls through a PBX operator.
The administrators of the new telephone system were Señor Rodolfo Macias, and Señor Escotria. The first PBX operators were Señorita Professor Carmelita Peña, Señorita Sara Solis and the niece of Señor Macias.
There was a grand opening celebration ceremony. Among the attendees were Señor Pascual Morán, General Manager of Banco de Comercio, don Roberto Contreras Quintero, Señor Gustavo Ruelas, General manager of Mexicana Airlines, señor Eduardo Marroqui, representantive of the Hotel Motel Association, Señor Francisco Calvillo, Engineer Luis Gutierrez, and Dr. Efrén Calderon. Other representatives of Telefonos de Mexico Company were Señor Virgilio Rincón Alvarez, Zoning Director, Gilberto López Ruelas, Zoning Technical Engineer, and Señorita Ana Maria Rodriguez, Trainig director for PBX operators.
It was not until 1968 that Puerto Vallarta finally had residential telephone service. This was a major step toward the development of the city.
