VALLARTA MEMORIES

Benefactor of the children of Vallarta 1942

From the book "Puerto Vallarta My Memories" - June 2007

In 1942 Señor Agustín Flores Contreras, a philanthropic individual showed special interest in helping promote the education of the children of Vallarta.

Señor Flores was born in Tepic, Nayarit, in 1888. Flores moved to Puerto Vallarta in 1910 at a very young age. During three years, he worked as a bookkeeper for Casa Maisterrena.

After a few years Señor Flores moved to Santiago Escuintla and joint ventured with his two brothers, to buy a regional produce business. He returned to Puerto Vallarta in 1918 and opened his own business naming it Casa Flores Hermanos. His business became very successful and made him one of the most important entrepreneurs in Vallarta.

Flores philanthropic as he was soon started showing how much Vallarta meant to him. He built schools and also improved our cultural level.

In 1942 the population of Vallarta had increased dramatically. The few school buildings were not enough for the educational needs of our local children. Aware of this situation, Flores built four additional classrooms onto the existing building facility, and basketball court. The new school was named 20 de noviembre School for Boys.

In 1943 Flores funded school 15 De Mayo School for Girls. Principal Teresa Barba Palomera led the faculty.
