VALLARTA MEMORIES

First Sister City program, 1964

From the book "Puerto Vallarta My Memories" - July 2007

On January 18, 1964 the Official Delegation of Tourism from our sister city of Encino, California, arrived in Vallarta. They were here to create a bond of friendship between the two communities. The sister cities program was an idea of former president of United States, Mr. Eisenhower. It derives from another U.S. program he created, called Town to Town. The objective of the program was to better the relationship between two countries.

At the head of the tour from Encino were Mr. and Mrs. Harold Greene. The traveling agents were señor William Alexander and señorita Christy Young.

Mayor of Vallarta, señor Carlos Arreola Lima, helped to put the program together. The events welcome committee was formed with the collaboration of the community. The first honor guests from Encino were welcomed at the airport with flowers and mariachi music. Señor Escotría and his wife, offered a cocktail party in their honor. A dance gala took place at Lions Club. Señora, Malena Lechón, presented a dance show performed by the local Mexican Folkloric ballet. The group from Encino visited local schools, recreation canters and the hospital.

The city Hall awarded tha people of Encino with a certificate of friendship at a dinner offered at Marcial and Adelita Resendiz’ home. Señor Gustavo Ruelas, general manager of Mexicana Airlines, was the assigned coordinator for the sister cities program.

During a celebration ceremony, an oak tree was planted in the Main Square as a symbol of friendship between the two cities. The tree was mailed from Encino by “Save the Oak tree” organization. Unfortunately, the tree was cut in 1979 for building the new City Hall.
