In 1955 my daughter Luz, started designing clothes for many Americans. Her name was quickly spread after designing clothes for celebrities such as Tito Brockman .
Luz opened he own store in 1956. The was located on 13 Iturbide street. It was first clothing store with original designs. The name of the store was Luz Chop, featuring her original designs.
Many celebrities such as Selma Gordon, Baby Backer, Cathy Pivary, Clarita, Helen, etc., visited Luz Sop. The first fashion show took place at Oceano Hotel. A la Foote was the Fashion coordinator and also a model for Luz’s designs.
The fashion shows started gaining popularity in Vallarta. Many local girls modeled Luz’s fashions. Among them were Estela Rendón, Chela Padilla, Judit Vargas, and Licha García.
After Luz, other clothing stores followed, Nelly Wunlff, a newcomer, and local young girl, Rodelinda, opened their own stores with original designs. The “muumuu” garments were very popular at that time. Local people used to call them “jolotes” for loose square cut dresses. They were hand embroil dared in bright, beautiful colors.
Yolanda, my daughter, learned the clothing busies in 1958 after working for Luz, her sister. She soon became an original clothed designer, and creates her own signature. Yolanda contributed to the promotion of fashion in Vallarta. In 1960 she opened her own children’s clothing store.
The new fashion industry proved to be most beneficial to the progress of Vallarta. The unique designs created by hard working designer locals ladies, helped Vallarta acquire an original fashion style that gained international popularity. The new industry created also jobs for many women that were talented in hand embroidery and sewing, and launched the City’s economy.
Through the years the interest in Puerto Vallarta’s fashions grew strongly. We attained worldwide recognition.
In 1966 a first national fashion show of its kind took place in Guadalajara City, thanks to the valuable collaboration of our State Governor Attorney Francisco Medina Ascencio. Designers from all over the nation participated in the fashion show. Email to a friend
