Christmas Eve Ball organized
by local ladies.
December 24, 1932
|
In 1932 a group of enthusiastic local ladies organized
the first Christmas and New Year's Eve party, which
became a tradition. We dressed up in elegant long lilac
growns made of dove gauze. Men wore black suits and
bow ties. The ladies paid for the Christmas dance,
which included the music, wine and hors d'oeuvres.
The men reciprocated paying for the New Year's Eve
dance.
December holidays took place
on the patio of the Historical house next to the
City Hall on Juárez Street. Each year we
decorated the patio with traditional Mexican Christmas
motifs. The old house was vacant and had ample corridors,
a big patio, and it was considered the roomiest in
town. Local people often had events there. Mr. Silowey,
the propietor, who was the general administrator
of Hacienda Ixtapa, had moved to México City, abandoning
the house.
My heart aches for those memorable
times when we lived life to the fullest in a clean,
healthy way without complications. It was the era
of romanticism, waltzes, and sighs.. It was the time
when gentlemen vowed when asking a lady and her parents
for permission to dance. It was the era when most
beautiful romances were in bloom, many of them ending
in marriage.
Our older generation lived life to the fullest. We
were left with unforgettable memories that will never
be erased from our minds. The tradition of Christmas
and New Year's Eve holiday dances has prevailed through
the years.
The picture below was taken in 1939. It shows he aspects
of the Galas.
