000075 Visit since
Arturo Gómez Sánchez,
grandson of Don Guadalupe Sánchez, founder of
Las Peñas, was the Mayor of Vallarta in 1929.
After a meeting with local people, it was the Mayor
of Vallarta in 1929. After a meeting with local people,
it was agreed to name one of the Streets of Vallarta
after his grandfather Don Guadalupe Sánchez.
A special ceremony took place and Mayor Gómez
Sánchez unveiled a commemorative plaque.
Arturo Gómez Sánchez
was Mayor of Vallarta from January 1st to September
14, 1929. Señor Gabriel Nuño Vicencio
took over the City office.
The Anti-Christian Revolution was
at its climax during 1929. All religious cults were
banned. The Catholic mass services were conducted in
secret. We were very cautious to avoid being caught
by the Anti-Christians. We attended mass services secretly
at the house at Don Jacinto Macedo and wife, Manuela
Ponce. They were the maternal grandparents of renowned
artist, Manuel Lepe. Their old house was located on
the corner of Juárez and Iturbide Streets. People
used to call their house La Casa de la Carreta (or the
wagon house).
When the Anti-Cristian Revolution
was over, Father Gabriel Rocha, from Parish of the Valley
of Flags, was named active parish priest. Father Domingo
García was his successor, but Father García
stayed in Vallarta for only a short term.
On February 19, 1929, the Dioceses
of Tepic, Nayarit, sent Reverend José Ramírez
as the new parish priest. The town was excited to have
a new priest. We were eager to practice our religion
again.
Father Ramírez was a hard
worker from the beginning. He dedicated his efforts
and willpower to accomplish the construction of the
church that Father Ayala had left unfinished. He ordered
the coating of arches from the church’s nave,
rebuilt the lateral walls, and initiated the construction
of the dome. The altar was redone and new rustic benches
were purchased, giving the church a whole new aspect.
The general contractors were, Antonio
Murillo, Lino Mercado, and Gerónimo Murillo.
Father Ramírez was very sociable
and had liberal ideas. Everyone fell in love with him
right away. He was in charge of the Parish from 1929
to 1936. In 1936, Father Ramírez was promoted
to an honorable position within the Dioceses of Tepic.
Reverend Don Alfredo Rousse was his
successor. During his short-term tenure, Reverend Rousse
ordered the construction of the south dome where the
altar to Our Lady of Talpa is at present. The general
contractor was Pedro de la Cruz.
Father Don Luis Robles Corona took
charge of the Parish from 1938 to 1940. During his term
the construction of the dome was completed. The general
contractors were Antonio Murillo, Geronimo Murillo,
Rafael Rosas and Lino Mercado.
After the pastoral visit of Honorable
Bishop Hurtado, Father Salvador Casillas took over the
Parish.
