VALLARTA MEMORIES

001741 Visit since January 10, 2004

"Las Peñas", history behind the name

September 2, 2002
From the Book "Puerto Vallarta My Memories" - [Leer en español]

Famous historian, Don Matías de la Mota Padilla, writes vaguely about the time Spanish Captain Don Pedro de Alvarado disembarked his troops on a beach off the Bay of Flags in 1541.

The beach had rocks emerging from the ocean and lush vegetation. Alvarado and his crew found fresh drinkable water from the river, delicious wild fruits, great bird and deer hunting, and abundant fishing. In the background were beautiful waterfalls. It was the ideal place for disembarking the ships and camping. We tend to believe when Alvarado saw the rocks emerging from the ocean; he named the place Las Peñas (The Rocks) considering it a shelter. Las Peñas was also mentioned in some pirate novels.

At the end of the past century, treasure chests were found on a beach near Las Peñas around Punta Mita. They were full of gold and silver coins. This confirms the presence of pirates at one time.

Some local historians have said that in some places near Punta Mita, they discovered mounds and when excavating found valuable archeological pieces, obsidian weaponry, bronze artifacts, and faces sculpted in stone.
