VALLARTA MEMORIES

000093 Visit since

First Local Theater, Saucedo 1922

January 12, 2003
From the Book "Puerto Vallarta My Memories" - [Leer en español]

Don Juan Saucedo ordered the construction of Saucedo Theater. The theater was a two-story building located one block north from the main Square, at the northeast corner of the intersection of Juárez and Iturbide Streets.

The façade was a design of Italian engineer Angel Corci. The grand opening was an event that marked one of the first steps toward culture in Puerto Vallarta.

On the top floor of Saucedo Theater there was a Casino with a pool table. The theater became the hottest place in the town and the meeting place for all local young people.

The theater also served as a Ball Room. There were yearly dances organized there for each celebration. Visitors from Guadalajara, Mascota and Talpa attended many of the popular dances at Saucedo Theater.

The bottom floor of Saucedo Theater was divided into two rentals. One room was leased to Hacienda Delagation (Treasury Delegation). The head of Hacienda was Don Joaquín Bolaños Cacho. His daughter married José Carranza, a wealthy farmer from Las Palmas (The Palms). The corner room was leased to the Macedo brothers, Jesús and Chon. They had a barbershop business. Chon sold lottery tickets in his free time.

Saucedo Theater opened its door with plays from foreign companies that traveled long ways for performances. The theater plays became the main attraction of the town.

The actors came either by ship or through strenuous horseback roads.

At present, the old building of Saucedo Theater still keeps its original structure.

It was said that Señor Saucedo arrived at San Blas Port in the State of Nayarit in 1889 as a representative of Casa Lanzagorta, a commercial Spanish firm. He later moved to Vallarta to be in charge of a ship agency.

Señor Saucedo opened a miscellaneous shop across from the main square close to the waterfront. His shop changed ownership twice through the years. It was first the payroll office of Don Ramón Maisterrena and then the property of Don Alfonso García. The building was torn down later in order to build the new City Hall.

People said Señor Saucedo was a hard worker and a tenacious person. He made a big fortune as many other people did on those times. He invested a lot of money in real estate. Señor Saucedo left Vallarta when the Mexican Revolution started and moved to Guadalajara City.
