Doctor Marcos Guzmán was the
Mayor of Vallarta from January 1926 to January 1927.
It was a tempestuous evening in October
1926 when a tornado coming from the Cuale River Mineral
area hit Vallarta violently. The river swelled, and
the wind uprooted trees with a deafening noise. The
tornado destroyed everything in sight, from mango orchards
to banana plantations on the other side of the river.
It flooded the corrals of Lupe and Victoria Ruelas,
and the warehouse of Don José Baumgarten Escudero,
where he stored wood, hides and other goods. Everything
was destroyed. The ensuing storm hasted 15 long days
with hard rain. The river swelled flooding the town.
The rivers of Ameca and Mascota on the north side caused
major damage.
People were left stranded without
communication. The Reverend Ayala, the military and
all our neighbors helped with the rescue. Although there
were no casualties, we feared the flooding of agricultural
fields could bring major problems such as shortage of
food, scarcity of prime necessities, disease and economic
hardship. A group of local people united their prayers
to Sacred Heart of Jesus. Miraculously, the rain stopped
the next day giving way to a special day in June, (Holiday
of the Sacred Heart) as a day of prayer. Catholic employers
honored a holiday with pay for employees and allowed
them time off the attend church services.
Heads of Catholic groups organized
events to give thanks to Sacred Heart of Jesus. A group
of people met at the church offices on January 6, 1926,
at 12:00 pm to sign an official testimony of thanks
before Reverend Ayala. The document still remains by
the feet of Virgin Mary’s Statue.
