Being able to hear the bird songs clearly every morning, like we haven’t heard them in years (because of the town being so empty), in the middle of uncertainty and frustration, the month of May began with the notice that, aside from the fact that the cruise ship lines had cancelled their visits to Mexican ports, approximately 90% of the hotel reservations in Puerto Vallarta & Riviera Nayarit had also been cancelled. If you know Puerto Vallarta, I am sure that you cannot imagine what this means for all of us!...
From my point of view, it is irrelevant for us to discuss whether or not the travel advisories against travel to Mexico were justifiable. It is obvious that the flu news has affected all our sectors negatively, and even dramatically. Nevertheless, the situation now is that Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit, like all the tourist destinations in Mexico, are alive and well and working hard to reactivate the great tourist activity which is even more valued today, and truth be told, I believe that the resurgence will be phenomenal… Vive Mexico!
As never before in the history of our port, the government of the State of Jalisco is supporting it with $240 Million Pesos for its national and international promotion. All of us in Puerto Vallarta have begun to work to reactivate the affluence of travelers. Much remains to be done, but the first step has been taken.
During the May 5 long weekend, our beautiful destination looked very quiet, to that point that, seeing the empty streets at times, I recalled the indescribable calm that reigned in this port some two decades ago. As I was daydreaming of the past, I remembered my good friend back then, Jorge Sánchez, with whom I had the honor of working in the restaurant industry, and who, with great enthusiasm, had informed me of some changes in the menu of his restaurant –Shanghai- a few days earlier. I went to visit him and the experience was truly delicious. I found new, extravagant and delicious recipes in his menu. Together with attractive promotions, they are generating an important increase in the number of clients for the restaurant. The air-conditioned setting offers a cool and pleasant ambiance, but for those who prefer to stay home or in their hotel, Shanghai’s home delivery service continues… and in fact, better than ever! The Sánchez family is committed to offer and add value to what was already a very good option in Oriental cuisine. Shanghai is localed in Blvd. Fco. Medina Ascencio 1978, Zona Hotelera. Open Wednesday to Monday 1 to 11 pm. Phone: 224-1962.
And still on the topic of food, I want to tell you that although the Fiestas de Mayo were cancelled, Restaurant Week was not. For the occasion, following a couple of weeks during which owners Ulf Henriksson and Bernhard Güth “refreshed” their restaurant, Trio reopened its doors for all to enjoy its very exclusive and exquisite world of Mediterranean cuisine. A visit to Trio is an experience that any connoisseur of good cuisine must enjoy during his stay in our port. In our next issue, we will publish some reviews of the restaurants that participated in this year’s edition of Restaurant Week. In the meantime, do not miss the review of Trio Restaurant Bar published this month, authored by Gary Beck and Anna Reisman.
A seafood tradition in Vallarta, Tino’s Restaurant, inaugurated its new location in Plaza Vallarta, a few steps from the Malecon. I had the opportunity to chat with its chef for a few minutes and he told me that in addition to the traditional recipes, new, very flavorful ones have been included in the menu. Aside from its excellent location, the new place is ample and still offers the distinctive family atmosphere we have become accustomed to at Tino’s. Congratulations …and we promise to be back soon to enjoy all the new dishes!
I had the pleasure to visit my good friend Anthony Garzino who proudly showed me his most recent work of art – in jewelry. “Mr. Gold Man”’s mastery in working the details of his creations is simply amazing. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit his workshop at 152 Francisca Rodriguez in the Romantic Zone on the south side of town. This is not just another jewelry store! Get to know Anthony, a magnificent jeweler with obvious great human qualities. As a matter of fact, I conducted an interview with Anthony recently, during which he gave me some tips to help me ensure that precious stones were real. I promise to share them all with you next month.
For me, I spent the month of May writing a lot, setting up new strategies and proposals, looking to increase the promotion of our region through the electronic means at our disposal: PVMirror, Go2Vallarta, Go2RivieraNayarit, and of course, Go2Mexico, always with a view to benefiting our sponsors… a whole lot of work. Nevertheless, I did take time off to escape to the south, stopping in at Restaurant Le Kliff which, without question and regardless of the time of year, is one of the most exciting places around, with spectacular views.
We ended the month with the knowledge that 90% of the tourists who were supposed to visit us …did not. Very sad indeed. True, but this is not the end; rather, it is the beginning of a new era in Puerto Vallarta, Rivera Nayarit and all the tourist destinations in Mexico. Aside from marking the 91st anniversary of Puerto Vallarta as a municipality, and its 41st as a city, May was the month when we realized that our systems and strategies are vulnerable. This town has never faced a crisis of this size, and though it is painful, it has also been a lesson for many of us who, focused on doing the right thing, will come out stronger with God’s help, to a new era in the history of our port. Soon, the activities and the hustle and bustle will return to their normal working rhythm. We went to the movie theater a few days ago and there we could note that after a few weeks of uncertainty, everything is definitely returning to normal. Our town is more than just alive and well, it is promoting itself for what it is: a beautiful, exuberant tropical spot on Mexico’s Pacific coast, a place that awaits all nature lovers with open arms, as well as lovers of art, culture, adventure, beauty, romance, relaxation, luxury, good food, trustworthy investments, and so much more.
Please spread the word that Mexico is Alive… and of course, that Puerto Vallarta is too, now with more gratitude and happiness than ever!... Email to a friend
May God bless Puerto Vallarta, our people and you, always with abundance.
