WHAT'S NEW IN VALLARTA

Chronicle… naturally
By Jesús de Avila • July 2009

cronicaAs always, with great poignancy, in his column “Desde Mi Balcón”, Nacho Cadena observes that right this moment – in view of the adverse situations that have caused a dramatic decrease in the flow of visitors to Mexico – we are all faced with the same opportunities. Finally what was anxiously sought after but hardly thought would happen is now our reality. All destinations in Mexico have hit rock bottom and with the same opportunities to attract foreign visitors, from this stage we launch our new race towards an effective positioning of Puerto Vallarta & Riviera Nayarit.

I agree with Nacho and also hope the resources the state government granted like never before for promotion and the touristic recuperation of our beautiful destination, will be used wisely and promptly, as the race looks quite competitive.

Beginning May, our brand-new Convention Center greeted Meeting Place Mexico, boosting trade, the closing of new deals and raising the spirits throughout. Vallarta Vive and the convention center may soon become a basic and functional tool to attract the attention of a good number of first class events and exhibits. Business travel is an attractive open door to our port and now, more than ever, must be exploited.

cronica We can say that the rainy season has officially begun and those are magnificent news, well, at least for me. I love Vallarta in the rainy season. The aroma of damp earth is an open invitation to leave the car behind and walk the cobble-stone streets. The mountains start to blossom with greenery, clay-tile roofs turn red, rivers swell, kids jump and wade ponds and the whole city is refreshed. Due to a rainstorm last week I had to change my City Paper delivery schedule in the south side; I was off to an early start by six in the morning and the experience of seeing my Puerto Vallarta awaken was simply wonderful. Dawn that morning, after the intense rain was incredible! The calm blue, blue sea and the clean, transparent sky over downtown Vallarta, with lamb-shaped clouds gathering over the mountains, reminded me of my first rainy season here over thirty years ago! That is my Puerto Vallarta with its image of cheerful and fresh nostalgia, making us stop to enjoy the sight of the town (more like a city now) that despite the huge development, maintains its typical and intimate flavor. How beautiful Puerto Vallarta is in the rainy season! If you, dear reader, have a chance to get away, do not hesitate, hop on a plane right this minute! Call me upon arrival and we’ll go stroll the downtown area or the Cuale River banks, while we let ourselves be soaked by the warm rain! My cellular number is 322 150-7228.

By the way, tropical storm “Andres” passed by, nothing to report, thank God. Several friends while researching chatted about the chances of a tropical storm or hurricane like Kenna in 2002 could hit Puerto Vallarta, these happen once every twenty years! Once again, thank God! No doubt the location of Puerto Vallarta is to be envied by several resort destinations in the Pacific Coast.

As announced, greeted by the local authorities (and a good mariachi band), last June 25th a cruise ship arrived, the Mariner of the Seas, creating a great hubbub at the port terminal and downtown. It worked like a balm for a good number of businesses and stores in the area. Some believe the economic return from three thousand passengers to be approximately three hundred thousand dollars. There is no doubt hard times are an ideal way to help us value and share what we have, work with more enthusiasm, manage well our income and thank God for our health and our wonderful surroundings, for maintaining us and being our purveyors.

cronica At Restaurant Casa Naranjo, while I observed and documented in pictures how chef Edson Andrés Espinoza Covarrubias prepared the “Chuletón de Cerdo Casa Naranjo” (Big Casa Naranjo Pork Chop), his father, Mr. Alavaro Ramirez Espinoza, told me part of the unbelievable story of how five years ago, accompanied by his wife Lucy (Main chef), they decided to switch their line of business from a print shop to a restaurant, and the process that ensued. This confirms that once again, our destination has been formed by a great array of happenings and anecdotes that color the lives of Vallartenses. We agreed to, in another occasion, get together to chat and compile information on the port and its working people, something we will surely be sharing with you. In the meantime I can assure you that the recipe of the “chuletón” (big chop) is something you really have to try on your next visit to the restaurant. Casa Naranjo is located on Calle Naranjo 263 Colonia Emiliano Zapata. Reservations recommended at: 222-3518 Website: http://www.casa-naranjo.com

My very dear friend and collaborator Eduardo Rincón-Gallardo, has very emphatically commented that Chef Bernhard Güth, co-owner of Trio & Vitea restaurants, has been creating at Vitea a series of degustation menus to blend with some of the wines of his great and select cellars, therefore breaking away from traditional pairing schemes and surprising all, regulars and newcomers. We should profit from Vitea’s reopening and personally check-out what Eduardo insists is the richest and most innovative gastronomic happening in our port. If just after reading this you decide go and jump the gun, please just tell them that you are there on my recommendation! Thank you.

cronica As I told you earlier, next July 5th is Election Day for city mayor and house representatives. The race is definitely between two political parties, PRI (present local government) with their candidate Salvador González Reséndiz, and PAN with Ignacio Guzmán for city mayor. A “ley seca” (dry law, no alcohol sold) will be enforced starting a day before and until Sunday night at midnight. Puerto Vallarta is not exempted from the rule and elections are always held orderly and peacefully.

A day prior to our elections is Fourth of July, commemorating the Independence of the United States, so all our American readers please receive our great recognition and congratulations on the 233rd anniversary of your declaration of independence. God bless the United States of America.

I also take this opportunity to let you know that our new office is located on Yugoslavia Street # 292-A, at Colonia Versalles, between the streets of Niza and Havre, Código Postal 48310.

Please remember that our PV Mirror City Paper Weekly is available at: http://www.pvmirror.com/citypaper. Email to a friend

May this month of July carry lots of blessings for you all.
