As I strolled down “Los Muertos” beach very early one morning, I realized that after many years the authorities seem to be renewing the old dock. This is a historic place and it definitely has lots of stories and anecdotes to tell. This place is essential to the life of Puerto Vallarta, most specifically to the “Romantic Zone”, where as a matter of fact, part of the history of our port started several years ago. This month I am going back to the old dock to see how the works are coming along, I will also profit from that opportunity to take more shots of some very special spots in order to bring to life one or several photo galleries of what is considered the most traditional and significant zone of our destination.
Mainly due to the fact that our editor decided to use a piece by painter José Baldi for the cover of issue number 39 of the City Paper, I had the privilege of meeting him personally as well as his magnificent works in exhibit at Plaza Galerías since the beginning of last month. I have always been attracted to enjoying and admiring the visual arts, however, few times have I been taken so dramatically as when I faced the paintings of this self-taught artist from
Tepozotlán in the State of Mexico; he has been living in Puerto Vallarta for the past three years. May I take this opportunity to invite you to read the brief review we are publishing about his works, and better so, please be advised that if you are as taken as me by what you see, you can buy an original or even commission a special piece for your special taste through our Art Gallery.
Our local elections went by quietly as usual, the PRI (Partido Revolucionario Institucional) being the winning party. Our next young city mayor will be Salvador “Chava” González Reséndiz. Most of us believe his youth could be a significant limitation to his performance in office, though he is known to be supported and continue to be so by seasoned collaborators, experienced in the political doings of our city; at times I do not know which of the two aspects may be more troubling. We all wish and expect an administration that is committed to the genuine welfare of our community as well as the efficient re-launch of our touristic activities. Although we still cannot picture how our president will sort the circumstances Puerto Vallarta now faces, we hope this time the PRI will take its triumph as an opportunity to reassert itself. May God bless and grant His wisdom to Salvador González Reséndiz and his team of collaborators.
On a more personal note, I should share with you that July was specially filled with action. It had been already several months that Montserrat and I had decided to marry on July 24, so for several weeks – amidst our working hours – we had to finalize the details of the ceremony, a fact that gave me a chance to become involved with the field of organizing and coordinating weddings, which now I can call a fascinating activity.
Our idea of a ceremony was modified in about 70% of our original concept (thank God), and we finally celebrated it at the Sheraton Buganvilias Resort & Convention Center in an area called “el espigón” (the jetty), which turned out to be the perfect venue, framed by a sunny day, fresh breeze, magnificent views of the port and the ocean and much more. In a future edition I will share with you a review emphasizing some of the bounties that have made Puerto Vallarta a very special wedding destination. My wife and I thank God for allowing us to arrive at this stage of our lives and for the lives of all the people who joined us in delivering our marriage to the Lord.
We knew our favorite place would be the perfect scenery for our honeymoon, so after the ceremony we sped out to the road heading towards the beautiful, quiet and magical town of San Sebastián del Oeste. Soon I will also share a review emphasizing why that town is the ideal place for a honeymoon, relaxation, adventure and personal regrouping, among other things.
Celebrating our wedding at the Sheraton Buganvilias Resort & Convention Center, allowed me to meet Omar Corral, Food and Beverages Manager, who besides greatly helping us to carry out the celebration on the surf’s jetty, told me that their specialties’ restaurant “Gaviotas”, has been reopened to the public, offering a Mexican gourmet menu worthy of being enjoyed throughout the year. I visited Restaurant Gaviotas and was able to confirm that besides the great comfort and excellent taste in decorations and ambiance; it offers spectacular views of the bay and most of all, an exquisitely seasoned, world-class gourmet cuisine. In future editions we will publish a review of the special experience of dining at Gaviotas; in the meantime let me tell you that even if you are not a guest of the Sheraton Buganvilias Resort & Convention Center; Restaurant Gaviotas’ gates are wide open to greet you. While the number of international flights grows, the heat also strengthens, forecasting tropical showers and of course, more humidity and greater exuberance of the vegetation surrounding our exciting port.
At the beginning of this warm summer we are greeting thousands of national tourists making the best of school holidays and crowding our destination. The beaches are full of activity and a considerable number of businesses and restaurants are benefitting from it.
Even when a few weeks back our president confirmed that our country is in a downright recession; when driving on the main thoroughfare and the downtown streets such news seem to belong to another Mexico. The general economic situation of our country continues to be troubled although this is not felt as strongly in our port; experts assure that the recovery of destinations like ours, Los Cabos, Mazatlán, Riviera Nayarit and Manzanillo among others, will be as slow as that of the United States, on whom their touristic activities depend.
I just read that another several million pesos have been authorized for the international promotion of our Puerto Vallarta, however, sometimes I ask myself: What did they finally decide to do with those received several months ago? I will be sure to interview those responsible to hear from their very voices what investments are being made to attract more international tourism.
Another wonderful gift Summer brings us is the fiery red of the flamboyant tree known here as “Tabachín”. In Puerto Vallarta these trees stand out with their striking red accents among the greenery of the mountains. Also the main avenue of Nuevo Vallarta is dressed with hundreds of these peculiar trees. It may sound outlandish though, when I see their warm red color overflowing everywhere, it reminds me of the hues one sees during the period of the year when fall turns into winter in the northern United States and part of Canada. Resting under the shade of a Tabachín is an experience all should allow themselves to enjoy.
This is all for the time being… I beg our pardon for the delay in publishing this column; this time I am sure my alibi stands; I got married! Email to a friend
