A season with a rainy start; although for just a few hours; it was nonetheless an unusual event. We regularly perceive the aroma of damp earth and clay tiles in the summertime; however, this year we even had rain on the 24th of December making this date even a more special one.
Great news is that the number of arriving flights into our destination has increased substantially and the sound of arriving jet engines is a delight to all. I am sure we all here longed to hear arriving and departing planes frequently. Thank God we keep on recovering.
What a view! Beginning December I was invited to get acquainted with the restaurant Vista Grill’s new concept, and of course sampling their new menu. It was a very well attended event and a very pleasant experience, having the opportunity of greeting many old friends I had long not seen. However what most captivated me was the magnificent panoramic view offered by this venue. No doubt Vista Grill, besides having a most select cuisine, has the most spectacular view of our very own Puerto Vallarta.
Boca de Tomates is a beach with fine, darker sand located on the southern banks of the Ameca River, it is the traditional favorite place for many locals and visitors alike wishing to spend family Sundays together at dozens of “ramadas” that are typical coastal restaurants; their name relates to their boundaries lined by palm-tree branches, “ramas” in Spanish, offering the catch of the day, mainly the “pescado zarandeado”, a traditional recipe originated in Mexcaltitán, Nayarit, that has become a traditional recipe of the region. Most restaurants compete to offer you the best “zarandeado”, and the secret - according to some expert chefs – lies in the sauce with which the fish is bathed while cooked, while some locals say it acquires its flavor from the firewood used to cook the fish, originally mangrove, abundant in our area. It had been almost twenty years I had not visited this beach, it turned out to be a very pleasant surprise. We decided to eat at a “ramada” named “Chabela”, which apparently is the favorite for most visitors. We ate and had a good time enjoying the very special sensations that can only be felt in such typical places. You are surrounded by a bustling context, peddlers of necklaces, bread, balloons, kites, ices and other crafts are part of the scenery, including of course music performed by guitar-playing soloists and properly attired northern cowboy bands. All I mean by saying this is Boca de Tomates is a place you must get to know and enjoy on your next visit!
By mid month I had a chance to visit the Coastal University Campus, Centro Universitario de la Costa of the Universidad de Guadalajara, and I profited from this opportunity to visit the Peter Gray Museum, it displays a select collection of the masterworks of very prestigious artists. Although it is not a touristic place it is open to the public and is well worth a visit. Its halls have been enriched by new works thanks to this very special museum’s new sponsors. The museum displays paintings and sculptures by Mexican and foreign artists dating back from the XVIII century to the present times. Some of the artists who have donated their works are: Joan Miró, Manuel Felguérez, José Luis Cuevas, Ada Colorina, Daniel Incháurregui and Manuel Lepe, among others. Something quite significant adding to this new year’s anticipation is the arrival of the new City Hall headed by city mayor elect Salvador González Reséndiz, who seems to have good political backing; this leads us to believe that this new stage of the municipal government has a chance of doing much better than last. Although we know that nothing is totally certain in politics, we can at least pray this new administration will function with wisdom, not losing our sight on the fact that we are a very attractive tourist destination for a foreign visitors market, as well “baby boomers” searching for better retirement options.
As a matter of fact, the real estate industry has regained momentum and that is a clear sign that recovery is starting to be felt in the region, thank God.
Finally we have completed a 2009 going through circumstances and challenges never faced before in Puerto Vallarta and the result – taking the magnitude of consequences into consideration – is quite encouraging, urging us to raise our level of commitment and effort to move on from “the world’s friendliest city” to “the warmest, most professional destination in the global tourist industry”.
Thanks to you all, our more than 50 thousand readers favoring us every month with your reading and feedback; PVMirror’s staff thanks God for each one of your lives and ask Him for His Great Blessing so that this 2010 be for you and your families, in all the facets of your lives, the most prosperous ever.
